Scandium is a silver metal. It was discovered in 1878 and has only been found in Scandinavia. Not much is known about its toxicity, and therefore the metal should be handled with care. When exposed to air, the metal gives off a pinkish cast. Scandium is used to produce high-intensity lights, and is much more abundant on stars than it is on earth. In the sun, Scandium is about the 20th most abundant metal, and is widely distributed on Earth. Most Scandium found is usually in Uranium mill tilings and taken as a byproduct. The metal is soft and is closer in appearance and texture to rare metals than ones such as aluminum. It was first produced as a pound and 99% pure in 1960. It costs about $75 per gram.
