Chromium was discovered in 1797. The metal has a steel-gray color and is lustrous and hard. Because of the hardness of this metal, it is mixed with other metals to harden steel, create stainless steel, and form many alloys. However, its main uses are to create hard, beautiful surfaces, and to prevent corrosion on metals. When mixed with glass, the glass turns an emerald-green color and is also used as a catalyst. All of chromium’s compounds are colorful. They are toxic and should be handled with proper safety equipment and safeguards.
