Vanadium was discovered in 1830 and is named after the Scandinavian goddess Vanadis because of the element’s beautiful compounds. 99% pure Vanadium was not made until 1922. Vanadium is found in about 60 different types of minerals. Current Vanadium being produced is often made by calcium reduction. Vanadium is a white metal. Most of it that is currently being produced is used as a steel additive. Ductile Vanadium is currently available on the market. Vanadium has a good resistance against corrosion and is also used to make foil. The metal oxidizes after reaching a temperature of about 660 degrees Celsius. Vanadium steel is used to create non-rusting tools. Its compounds are toxic and the metal should be handled with care. 99% pure Vanadium is available for about $100 an ounce.
